RH20… Oluyomi Olumide Babafunsho Awolesi (RIP) 280320131703

A Little boy sits on a stool outside a store listening…

My love for literature was inspired by you

Harnessed by Soyinka, Chaucer, Shakespare, Achebe,

Rotimi, Ekwensi and many more as we read for ages

Under your intrigued eye, I became the lucid word-smith, Sage

Being wise beyond my years and adding spice to life

My love for Architecture was encouraged by you

As I would have you indulge my of flights of fantasy

seeing these as nowadays realities

You imbibed my spirit with hope and fluidity

even though at the time you had your flight as bird, caged

We never let them see us bleed

but we bled because of that mind-set feed

From paper rounds to late evening kebab stops

being taught the 2 step hop to playing hop scotch

Running free in the winds of South Norwood farm hills

to walking for hours in Idimu using inbuilt navigation skills

I grew watching you

You grew too…

Sharing scares and seeing mine given to me daily anew

reminded you of what it was to be me

Little bits of new old fraught realities

we learnt of distinct ways to feel free in confinement

You encouraged new age cave drawings

realising the truth told in cumulative art

From cosmic Silver Surfer to The Watcher the energy was boundless

my darkness given light by different senses

A new world to be beheld with differing viewpoints

from Chess to checkers, Monopoly Sunday mornings

Scrabble evenings and music interpretation everyday

Knowing I was no longer alone was because you

came into my life and freed the harpooned water bearer

To see the stand you took when you ran away

to take the stand with you and bear the scars to show it

not only inspired my understanding of family

but love for another human being

Taking a stand for the unjustly treated

You grew watching me

I grew too…

Sacrificing my dependence to show kindness

Not caring for me, hoping you could come back to family.. Seated

Seeing your self-imposed exile to the unfinished

lead to books unpublished and dreams unfulfilled

…Still you knew and still you held true

From business broking to laying in the

back of closed car boots scared

I always stayed…. I never strayed

Till I saw another god become mortal man

it aided my understanding of you

it bore the love I have for you

Knowing it will never cease

You walk, run and saunter on despite the trials self-inflicted or otherwise

You stay true to what you know

You need to know…

…You are always in my thoughts

never far, never far at all

We’re grown watching each other

As others grow too…

I love you Bro

never gone never forgotten

    • Hello Fatima.

It’s been a while I know and I am sorry for the lack of communication.
I don’t really have an excuse other than I truly done know what to say or how to say anything that makes sense of yours and my families loss.

That said I have decided to do better and reach out every once in a while to say hello and see how you are doing.

If you can forgive my actions and grant me this I will be very greatful to you because it will give us a chance to get to know each other.

      Let me know your thoughts.
